What a broker does

What a business loan broker actually does for you

A bank can only offer its own loans. A direct funder can only offer its own program. A broker’s job is to know which lender says yes to a file like yours, and on what terms.

1
Matches you to the right lenderEach lender has its own credit, industry and revenue rules. We know them, so your file goes where it fits.
2
Packages your fileWe present your cash-flow story the way underwriters read it, which can mean better terms.
3
Gets competing offersLenders price differently. Seeing several offers is the simplest way to lower your cost.
4
Saves you the shoppingOne application and one soft pull, instead of five applications and five hard inquiries.

How brokers get paid, and the red flags to avoid

How we’re paid

No surprises

  • No application fee and nothing paid up front
  • Brokers are usually paid a commission by the lender when your deal funds
  • Any fee you pay at funding should be written in your offer, in dollars
  • Ask any broker to explain their pay in writing. We will.
Red flags

Walk away if a broker…

  • Asks for a fee before you’re approved
  • Guarantees approval before seeing your bank statements
  • Pushes a merchant cash advance before checking for a loan
  • Stacks a second or third advance on top of one you have
  • Can’t show a license (in California, a DFPI license)

FAQ

Business loan broker: FAQ

Is it better to use a business loan broker or go direct?

If you have strong credit and a bank relationship, start with your bank. If you’ve been declined, need money quickly, or want to compare several lenders without filling out several applications, a broker usually saves time and money.

How do business loan brokers get paid?

Most are paid a commission by the lender when the deal funds. Some charge a fee at funding. A reputable broker will tell you how they’re paid, in writing, and will never ask for money before you’re approved.

Will a broker hurt my credit?

Not with us. We pre-qualify with a soft inquiry and send one file to the right lenders. Some products, like equipment financing, may use a hard inquiry at final approval.

Do I need a licensed broker?

Yes. In California, commercial loan brokers must be licensed by the Department of Financial Protection and Innovation. Liberty Capital Group holds CA DFPI license #60-DBO49692 and NMLS #2009539.

Do you only work with California businesses?

No. We’re based in San Diego and fund businesses nationwide through lenders that lend across the US.
